Just Stuff

So, I sort of took the first part of the week away from the computer. I usually meet with a friend and we have a routine of cleaning our houses and doing that kind of stuff in the morning with chatting in between. But I wasn't feeling really well, so I just did my work quickly in the morning and sort of worked on sitting still things the rest of the time. I didn't even bake anything yesterday. Poor baking Thursday.

I finished the heel shaping on the second sock and will now start the gusseting and doing the round and around part. I might even finish it before my parents are here. But that depends entirely on what else I have to get done this weekend.

My parents are coming on Tuesday morning. I'm very excited, because I'll get to visit with them for a whole week and because I love having company. We don't have anything too amazing planned, probably the zoo at least. And my mom's been talking about Sedona and the Mesa Flea-market. But I think mainly they just want to get to hang out and relax somewhere warm and get to see our house and visit and stuff.

I may or may not have finished making Julie's wedding present. And that's all I have to say about that.

I've been working on putting together our wedding album. Only four years later. But now that I've started it, it's going together pretty well. I think I'll have Ben work on it with me this weekend and see if we can't finish it. Not that he'd actually scrapbook, but he'll keep me company and watch tv with me while I do it, and he'll help me decide what pictures go where sometimes. I'm actually loving having a wedding album so much... I've been carrying around all the materials and everything for so long, it's about time I actually make a book out of it. And for some reason, having a wedding album seems way more important now than it actually did at the time. Funny how that works.

We've been working on the yard this week. I sprayed weeds all over the front yard and the back yard every day this week... and now my right forearm is all sore and keeps cramping when I knit. It's hard being a feeb. But the yard is going to be looking really great soon, I think. We got some patio furniture on Sunday and it was delivered Monday. I absolutely love it. I can't believe that I lived here for almost two years so far with no where to sit outside. I'm definately glad to have remedied that now, because I've been out there every day this week so far. It's really nice to sit out there and read or have a smoothie. I think it'll be the perfect place for breakfasts on the weekends.

Tonight we're going out with the newly married couples group from church. I guess that I know I have to step out of my shell and try to make some friends here. I don't really have any kind of a social life that isn't limited to Ben, the phone or the computer. And I know that that's not good for me, especially since I don't have a work life either, so I'm fairly isolated. All of that makes sense. And I do want to hang out with people. But I seriously don't want to go to AZ88 and try to make new friends on command with a group of people who already know each other. But that's probably because I'm chicken.

So I cleaned like crazy all morning and my house is back to being the way I like it, except for the scrapbooking all over the table, but if I put it away, I won't finish, and now that I've started, I want this thing done. The vaccum cleaner had been broken for almost a month, so things were getting grunchy. But now that it's back, everything is so much nicer. I hate it when the carpet feels all gross. Or when you can actually look and see that it hasn't been vaccumed in a while. Anyway, so it's good and peaceful in here, I think I'll see if I can finish the gusset part on my second sock. Then I'll be well on my way to a pair.

Tomorrow we're going to a coffee exhibit at the zoo. Ben's quite excited about it, so I'm resigned to being hot and walking a ton. In fact, I really should resign myself to that more often. I'm sure I'd be in better shape. And my summer clothes would still fit me. I can't wait till the pool is warm enough to swim.

I think I may be adapting to my environment. My attitude toward the lizards is changing. I no longer am filled with terror when I see one. I hate the way they skitter, but as long as they're not skittering at me, I'm okay with it. I'm getting used to them. There was one in the pool that had drowned, and I actually felt a little compassion for it! The desert is driving me crazy.

Birthday Girl!

So, I made this skirt yesterday to wear for my birthday:

Ben's taking me out to the fancy mall in Scottsdale for lunch and then to a spa to get a massage and then to dinner at the Melting Pot. So this is just hello from one very lucky, very excited birthday girl.

Oh yeah, I'm a mobile blogger...

The post that say they're picture mail or whatever are from my phone. And for some reason, you can't comment on the sock only on Humpty Dumpty. Anyway, there's the hot air conditioner guy. Sorry for the bad back lit photo... I didn't want it to be obvious that I'm some crazy housewife taking pictures of hot guys for my blog... hope he never sees it, lol.

So, crazy postage in the last couple of days, you'll probably want to scroll down to see all the new posts. That is, if my blog is that important to you, lol. Here's highlights: a picture of Ben, Julie's first wedding favor, my finished sock, I have big feet, and the hot guy.

Today I'm just hanging out. I'm going to Fashion Bug to use a ten dollar coupon I have. I'm thinking new sandals. And I cut out a skirt this morning that I'm hoping to finish.

Ben's got big plans for my birthday tomorrow, but I'm not sure what they are. I know we're eating dinner at the Melting Pot, and really, that's good enough for me, so it's sure to be a fun day. And my mom sent me one of those cool fun bingo scratchers and I won four dollars. Oh yeah... I think I'll go spend it all at the dollar store. As soon as she comes and trades me the cash for the scratcher so she can take it back to MI and redeem it. But after that, it's a four dollar shopping spree at the dollar store... I'm sure Ben will be happy to cover the tax... after all, he's my sugar daddy.

Wedding Favors... One Down, 299 to Go

Here's the proto type for Julie's favors... personally I think they're mmmmazing.

Stumble Upon Toolbar

My feet...

... are nine and a half inches long. That's got to be some sort of freakishly big number for a foot to be.

I was thinking while I knit this morning about the way people used to knit stockings... like true up to the thighish area stockings, with silk thread and wire thin needles with a gauge of like, 30 stitches to the inch. How did they not walk around with naked legs all the time? I mean, I'm enjoying knitting this sock, but one of my favorite things about it was how cool it was to see the heel part just appear so fast and all. But the yarn I'm using for these socks is like, 8 stitches to the inch, so I'm just imagining four times the stitches in each round, with a leg part alone that's like 20 inches long at least. It's boggling.

Anyway, I had a point. My point is... I get to start decreasing for the toe now. Hopefully, there will be sock pictures tonight. One sock mind you, but still... And when I start the next one, I can say that I'm knitting a pair of socks, instead of just, I'm knitting a sock. It's not a pair till you start the second one, in my opinion.

Not much to say...

So, anyway.
Yeah, not much going on here. I finished the heel shaping on the sock and now I'm at the part where you just knit around and around till it's long enough to fit your big foot. I have another inch or two on that. I want to finish at least the first one before I post pictures. But I really think that I enjoy knitting socks. Who woulda guessed?
I practiced driving on Sunday. All the way to the library and back. I'm not exactly sure how my driving skills detoriated to a point where I have to learn how over again... I think it's mostly that I hate traffic sooo much. But it's a useful skill, so I figure it'll be good to be a little more comfortable driving around.
On Friday last week, I took the bus to Mesa and went to the yarn store. That was the first time I'd tried the buses here. Turns out it works the same as in Kalamazoo. Duh. I just have to learn to recognize my stops a little better. I got off about a mile and a half early and was too prideful to admit to the driver that I'd hit the thing at the wrong time and didn't want that stop. So I walked all that way. No biggie really, I did need my exercise for that day, and that definately counted.
I ordered some new shoes from Amazon today. I really hope they fit well. I can't seem to find any good shoes to support my feet right. These were asics that were sixty percent off, so not a bad deal. And I know I like asics because I've had them before.
I got myself a little birthday present yesterday. I picked out six books from Amazon and got them. All time travel romances. Yes, I realize that that's another thing to add to the list of things I should be ashamed of being really into. But take my advice, if you want to read a really good, sexy, time travelly, trashy-ish book, get one of Karen Marie Moning's Highlander books.
Ben got a hair cut tonight. I'm getting pretty good, so I tried something new this time. I cut the sides shorter and left the top and back longer-ish. I think I may have made it a weird shape, but shh, don't tell him. It'll even out in a week or so. It always does.

Here he is looking kinda scruffy pre-hair cut. I'll have to see if I can get him to hold still long enough for me to take a comparison shot to show off my hair cutting skills.
Guess I had more to say than I thought I did. But what will I find to talk about tomorrow?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

That's a reconstructed shirt that used to be a man's ringer tee. I like the look of ringer tees but the problem with them is that the ribbing always shrinks and the the sleeves get too tight and gathered looking. So I cut the neck down, and the sleeve ribbing off, finished the edges with rick rack, and the shamrock is stenciled on. I have to admit, I was hoping for a more true white shamrock, but this is okay, it looks faded the way it is.

And Julie's just the sweetest friend:

This was my Christmas/Birthrday present that I got out of the blue the other day. There was also a pattern included for knitting the socks. I have to say, Julie thinks I'm a way better knitter than I really am. This is my first time knitting in the round, and definately the first time with double pointed needles, but so far it's proving to be more fun than normal knitting. I don't know why, it just is.

Yesterday I went to the goodwill since it was dollar day so I could get some sheets to cut a muslin of my bridesmaid's dress for Julie's wedding. I found those, plus a black t to cut up to use to reconstruct my Yarrr...n Pirate shirt that's just too baggy and slovenly looking. And a tank top for my self, and a super nice nordstrom's button down shirt for Ben. All for only a dollar each. I really enjoy dollar day at the Goodwill.

Also, I went looking at craftmart for supplies for a super secret project, but they didn't have what I was looking for, and I can't really imagine who would, so I might have to order online. Yuck. I might just revise the project. It's something I should have started a while back, but I'm a Procrastinator. Hasta la vista, baby.

What with Thursday being my baking day and all....

.... I surprised myself by baking some Irish Soda Bread yesterday. Ben asked for it especially, and truthfully, I didn't want to waste my normal baking day with something so... um... yucky. Also, he was in CA yesterday doing a reset, and I know he hates traveling in general and one day in and out trips in particular, so I figured he'd need a treat. I used the recipe his mom always used, which she got from her best friend's mom, which apparently came to Mrs. Sullivan's Great Grandmother in a dream. So it was bound to turn out, right?

Raisins and caraway seeds... those are about my least favorite things to find in breads. But Ben loved it, he said it was excellent and was really excited that I made it.

Also today I did this:

I have to admit, I was pretty attached to the Christmas Paper Chain. But I suppose there comes a time when even a nonspecific Christmas decoration like a paper chain must come down. Good thing for shamrock garlands.

I've got my potatoes and corned beef all ready for Friday. Not that I'd actually touch corned beef with a pole. It's another request from Ben.

I had a ton of things I wanted to post about, I kept thinking about them all morning. Let's see how many I can remember.

I was a total feeb on my bike today. You know that thing where you start to go, but the pedal was too low, so you don't get enough momentum, and you wobble and have to stop and turn the pedal back and try again? Well, I did that. Twice. It's ridiculous, because even for someone as challenged in the coordination department as I am, I'm pretty good at riding my bike. I mean, I do it every day just about. It's my means of transportation. And I almost fell when I got off the sidewalk onto the grass to go around this guy on a pimped out low rider bike... my bike tire didn't get up the little hump, and it slid out from under me. I was not happy with that hoodlum... no manners, everyone knows you should let the lady have the sidewalk. But I guess it was better than trying to play chicken with him.

I absolutely (I mean, completely and fully) hate the way they package men's shirts. Why the five million pins? Why the dippy pieces of collar shaped cardboard? Why the stupid little plastic button guard on the top button? ARGH. I had to undo three of those today. It took me fifteen minutes. Ben's not allowed to buy any new shirts that aren't on hangers. At least the ones on hangers, all I have to do is bite off the tag.

I'm a complete sucker. I never make the bed if the cats are in the blankets, because I just don't have the heart to make them move. Today I almost got mean and threw them out, they were being slugabeds... Columbo didn't get up till 10:30. Maybe I should stop catering to them so much.

Gilmore Girls makes me so happy. I want to go live in Stars Hollow so bad. I mean, I can actually see myself living there... I might work at a little book store that they've never showed before but is nonetheless there, or maybe a yarn store in the same situation. And I'd live maybe a mile out of town, with enough room for a garden and some chickens, but I would be able to ride my bike to work every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoon.... It would be so ideal.

I've been working on some different shirts for myself the last few days. The pink one I posted the other day, I like okay. But I hadn't really intended to make the sleeves split. I just didn't have enough fabric to cut them both out all in one piece, so I worked around it. I have one planned that I'm so excited about. I haven't started it yet, but I definately have to at some point today or tomorrow.

Okay, I think I'm spent. I really should just try to post more often.

Today's Project

I made something for myself today. The pattern is one that I made by tracing a new shirt I got recently at Torrid and love. The fabric is just a poly/cotton knit, and the trim is this cool cotton stuff that I got and the fabrics by the pound place in mesa. You probably remember when I bought it, Julie.

Okay, am I crazy for thinking this is cute? Ben pretty much hates it, but I just have to go with my own taste this time around. I'm liking it.

Once again, the camera sucks. If I can finagle it, we're getting a new one this weekend. Stupid thing, I think it got dropped. I'm not sure what else could explain such a drastic and sudden change in quality.

We're going to the ostrich festival this weekend. I'm just not sure if I'll like it. It seems so mean. I mean, I think they ride them. Well, maybe if I just stay away from the ostriches...

I finished the green sun hat for myself, but it's looking a little too limp. I'm going to try to starch the brim and then take some pictures.

I made Donna a tshirt that says I (heart symbol) Ace. I think she'll like it. I like Ace too, but I don't so much want to have his babies like I'm pretty sure my sister does. Anyway, it's just a plain light pink tshirt, with dark pink writing, going down the middle. I love my stencil cutter tool thing.

Sun Hat and Other Things

I've been so productive lately. I finished the sun hat for Ben's mom before they came, and I've got one in green in a different pattern for myself almost finished. I made Julia an adorable little dress. I was thinking of saving it for her birthday, but she's so sweet and good that she deserves a present whenever I manage to finish a project. I also made Ben a pair of pajama pants out of a Batman sheet that I picked up at the Goodwill on dollar thursday. It's been getting so warm, I wanted him to be able to wear some nice light cotton pants instead of the fuzzy flannel ones. Here's pictures:

It's wrinkled here because I washed it after I finished embroidering it, and I haven't ironed it again yet. The trim is light purple with little dark purple flowers.

This one's blurry, but is shows the general adorability of the shape better.

Here's what the embroidery design on the bodice looks like.

The dress is made of cotton fabrics and is fully lined. And if I do say so myself, I'm getting pretty snappy with putting in a zipper. Sorry, no time for pics of the sheet pants. Sorry about the general crappiness of the pictures. There's something seriously wrong with the camera.

Today I, among a ton of other things, took apart the little box and took it outside and scrubbed it. Lucky kitties.
